ABOUT
The History of Townley School
There were several locations of Townley School that started in a one room building in 1894. A large 2 story building was built in 1915, with 7 classs rooms and auditorium. This was known as the "School on the Hill.". The School was built in the present site in 1964, after the school burnt in 1962.
Townley is a small rural community located in Walker County. Townley Jr High
School was the heart of our community. Sadly, in 2010, the Walker County
Board of Education voted to close our school due to budget issues. After
closing, our school property was abandoned by the Board of Education and
left unprotected and unsecured. Left unguarded, the property fell prey to
vandals and thieves. The grounds were left unattended and became overgrown
and a real eyesore. The inside wiring, lighting and plumbing was stripped
and the majority of the glass broken.
So in early 2014, a small group of Townley Jr High School alumni began a
process of requesting that the property be deeded to the community. In April
of 2015, this dream became a reality and the work has begun.
